Moving beyond the ASBO

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, made a speech on Wednesday 28 July where she argued punishments should be 'rehabilitative and restorative', rather than 'criminalising'.

Joyce Moseley, chief executive, Catch22 says:

'ASBOs have been useful in the fight against anti-social behaviour in communities and any new proposals need to be balanced with the right support and intervention.

We recognise that in some communities people’s behaviour can make life virtually unbearable. Dealing with that behaviour is the responsibility of all of us.

In our experience, it is possible to work with families and turn the lives of young people engaging in anti-social behaviour around. Our successes are based on involving young people in positive activities, which can help to significantly reduce anti-social behaviour in local communities.

Catch22 welcomes a debate about the best ways to reduce anti-social behaviour among young people in local communities.'

All ASBO's appeared to be right from the inception, was a badge of honour, and did nothing in my opinion to lessen the act of crime, as an Appropriate Adult (Essex), I think the new NR procedure is much better, which also involves the agrieved
