Innovation for Employment
29 July 2010
Supporting young care leavers to succeed in employment
Young people who have been in care are one of a number of vulnerable groups who struggle to succeed in the work place. Innovation for Employment is a European Union funded employability project for care leavers. It works across five partner countries: the United Kingdom, Poland, Ireland, Romania and Hungary.
Often the disadvantage young care leavers experience is because of people’s attitudes towards them. However, a key factor is that care leavers often don’t have the personal skills and abilities to gain and sustain work. Young people who have experienced neglect, abuse and other forms of emotional damage early in life, can struggle to acquire the levels of confidence, resilience and self-management that are needed in young adulthood to enter and succeed in their relationships and at work.
Innovation for Employment is a new and unique project that brings together the development of emotional, resilience and relationship skills with the provision of employment opportunities for young people.
The partners will develop a shared model of social and emotional well-being training for care leavers that will be piloted and evaluated across all the countries. In addition, each partner country will develop its own employability model, providing work skills and experience to care leavers.
The Innovation for Employment Partnership

- Middlesbrough Leaving Care Service, UK
- North Lincolnshire Leaving Care Service, UK
- Academy of Management, Poland
- Irish Association of Young People in Care, Ireland

- Centre for Promoting Lifelong Learning, Romania
The project will run until early 2011. All the materials, resources and findings that are produced by the project will be shared across all the partner countries and wider European and international networks.
