The digital divide

Catch22's 'Young people and the digital divide' report presents the findings of research carried out in spring 2010 on young people's experiences of using the internet. It highlights the effects that the Government's drive to increase online services has on young people who have limited or no access to the internet.

We believe that the ongoing failure to recognise digitally excluded youths as a group requiring focus and support will lead to these young people becoming increasingly isolated from mainstream society. This makes it harder for them to succeed in education, find a job and apply for the support they need.

For those young people who are able to go online, there are concerns in terms of the ease and availability of access, and the ability to use the internet in a confidential and secure setting.

In order to ensure all young people benefit from the internet, our report makes a series of recommendations to help bridge the 'digital divide' between those who can access the internet and those who cannot.
