Bespoke Services: Peer Education

Accredited learning for year 11 (and above) students to gain NCFE qualifications in Sexual Health, Substance Misuse and/or Mental Health Awareness, who are then supported to develop and co-deliver themed workshops and presentations to younger students in their school, college or academy

11 to 18-years-old | Available in Essex

Young people in year 11 (and/or above) are supported in gaining an accredited NCFE qualification, then supported to develop a workshop or presentation, which students are then trained in co-delivering to their peers in years 7 to 10. The training enables Peer Educators to promote good choices and informed decision making by raising awareness around issues such as substance misuse, puberty and body awareness, sexual health, healthy relationship choices and mental health. Peer Educators deliver these sessions in a very interactive and practical way, for example Peer Educators may conduct a condom demonstration when covering contraception, and show sample drugs when going through substance misuse. Peer Educators provide the facts and are able to engage their peers in a way that other young people can often find more relatable and engaging than adults.

The programme is tailored to the ages of peer educators, and the workshop/presentation target groups, based on the needs of each school, college and academy.

Feedback

Peer Educators:

‘I have learned things about sexual health and drugs that I didn’t know before.’

‘It was interesting and fun.’

Deputy Head Welfare, Designated Lead for Safeguarding, Felsted School:

‘In the Spring term, 2 groups of year 12 peer counsellors were trained in Substance Misuse and Sexual Health Awareness (both NCFE Level 1). This was very well received by the students who really engaged with the group leader and clearly learnt a great deal. There was very little drop out during the term, which was very impressive as this was a purely voluntary activity and there are many other calls on the students’ time. Everybody completed their booklets and gained their qualification.’
