Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online

A young woman browses social media on her phone whilst lying on her bed.

Safer Internet Day is an annual social media campaign that over 200 organisations take part in every year. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of how to keep safe online, aiming for a world where everyone can have a positive interaction with the internet.

The theme this year is ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’. We asked young people from our employability programmes to create resources and materials that explore the theme, thinking about what issues really matter to them, what changes they want to see, and how we can all work together to advocate for young people moving forward, and have been sharing some of their work on our channels today.

Issues, change and working together: There is a total lack of safe online spaces for us young people to access. Communities online aren't DBS checked and lack a lot of safeguarding. There needs to be a safe space online that is DBS checked and safeguarded sot that us young people can access it knowing that we are safe. We need to work together to create a communications app that allows us to open up online while also making sure everything is kept confidential and safe for us to use. A word cloud containing words that come to mind regarding Safer Internet Day, including app, burden, community, confidence, confidential information, consumption, content, creators, funding, health, impersonations, internet, life, media, opening up, options, outdated, parental controls, personal safety, professional, protect, risk, safe, safeguarding, secure, social, teaching, validated, work
