Code4000 deliver computer programming training, or coding, in UK prisons and are the first organisation of its kind in Europe.

We believe that anyone can learn to code, and we support our students through a transformative journey that not only builds their coding skills but has a markable effect on confidence, self-esteem, and wellbeing.

Our approach

Our curriculum guides a novice programmer through their very first steps in coding to becoming a full-stack (fully trained) software developer.

The Code4000 curriculum starts with the basics of web-development, where students begin to build their first website. With the basics in place, students learn more advanced web-design techniques, building interactive, responsive webpages using a range of modern technologies. As students progress, and their confidence grows, they move onto yet more advanced topics, developing larger and more complex applications with a variety of uses.

Our impact

Computer programming is a skill much sought after by employers in the UK where there is a shortage of software development professionals. By teaching coding to people in prison, we are maximising their opportunity for gaining employment upon release which in turn is a large factor in preventing reoffending.

Code4000 offer a win-win solution to both the country’s reoffending problem and its tech-skills shortage. And it works! Many of our graduates have gone on to set up their own web-development agencies, and we have pioneered employment into the Financial Technology sector with graduates now working as software developers in high-street banks.

With more prison leaders looking to secure a Code4000 academy in their establishment, we hope to reach more people with our innovative curriculum and change yet more lives through teaching tech.
